Shoulder Pain

What can cause Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

This is a common cause of shoulder problem. The repetitive activity at the shoulder leads to impingement of tendons or bursa in the shoulder joint. Symptoms are pain and weakness of shoulder muscles and feeling difficult to putting hand around the back of the chest.

Rotator Cuff Tear

Rotator cuff involves four muscles covering the shoulder region. When the tendons of these muscles are torn, the structure called bursa (i.e. space filled with lubricant), gets also inflamed and cause pain. The symptoms includes, pain when lifting and lowering arm, weakness with lifting and rotating arm, pain remains at rest and really painful if lying on the involved side of the shoulder.

Shoulder instability

Shoulder joint is loosened up where head of humerus displaced too much and become unstable at the shoulder joint.

Glenoid Labral Tear

The labrum is made up of soft tissue that makes the socket to hold the arm bone in the shoulder joint. This structure can be torn and cause inflammation at the shoulder joint.

Brachial Plexus Injury

Brachial plexus is a group of nerves come from the spinal cord in the neck and passes down the arm. These nerves can be damaged by stretching action with the head move away from involved shoulder and injury occurred in the nerves. Symptoms includes weakness of arm and hand and numbness and tingling sensation in the affected area.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

A bunch of nerves and vessels pass through the space between the first rib and collar bone. It occurs after a sudden trauma like car accident or repetitive stress from the desk work or anatomically having extra rib at the neck region. As both vessels and nerves are compressed, it causes discolouration (purple) of arm, numbness and tingling sensation of arm and weakness of arm and loss of reflexes.
